Allergen Information

From December 13th 2014 Caterers must hold allergen information on all food sold loose to consumers.

The allergen information needs to be made available to the consumer on request, either verbally or in written format.

The 14 major allergens to be highlighted are;

  • cereals containing gluten such as wheat, barley
  • crustaceans, for example prawns, crabs, lobster and crayfish
  • eggs
  • fish
  • peanuts
  • soybeans
  • milk
  • nuts, such as almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, pecan nuts, Brazil nuts, pistachio, cashew and macadamia
  • celery (and celeriac)
  • mustard
  • sesame
  • sulphur dioxide, which is a preservative found in some products
  • lupin
  • molluscs, for example clams, mussels, whelks, oysters, snails and squid

Foods produced/ labelled on or after the 13th December 2014 must be labelled to include the necessary information on allergens in bold within the ingredients list.

Products produced before the 13th December which do not meet the new requirements can still be sold after this time, until stocks are exhausted.
